APOD: NGC 3628

NGC 3628 is a member of the Leo Triplet of interacting spiral galaxies that also include M65 and M66. The dust lanes, viewed edge-on (sideways) from our view on Earth, suggest that NGC 3628 is a spiral galaxy. The dust lane forms a band that hides bright young stars in the Galactic bulge. Thus, the galaxy is the faintest of the three, all of which are located 35 million light years away. It was discovered by William Herschel. In a deep field view, an arm extends out to the top left, suggesting that NGC 3628 interacts with M65 and M66.
